From .ORG to .NGO, the extension for Non-Government Organizations

After ICANN ’s decision to create new gTLD, populary known as .whatever, every week new initiatives appear. Today we have to talk about the Public Interest Registry, the non-profit company responsible for the registration of .org domain names. The company recently announced its intention to apply and manage the .ngo extension, which stands for Non-Government Organizations.

The new domain extension will be closed, exclusive for NGO. The main goal is make the extension a common signature, an easy way for creating community on the Web. It is important to note, as Brian Cute, PIR’s CEO affirms, that Non-Government Organizations feel a strong feel a strong connection with the acronym NGO.

The .ngo wants to become a complement for the existing .org, the domain extension which must NGO are using today although there is not any specific requirement for its registration. The new extension aims also to help a greater number of organizations to have a place on the Web.

The Public Interest Registry is not alone applying for the new extension. The initiative DotNGO, promoted by Victoria Harris, founder the NGO Article 25, has the same intention. We’ll have to wait till next year to know if the ICANN finally approve .ngo domain extension and which company will finally handle its registration.
